Which Type Of Hiker Classification Do You Belong To
Minimalist (Under 12 Pounds)
The minimalists are the type of people that take pride in creating their own gear. They would modify existing gear and cut off any parts that do not serve any purpose. They will cut off parts of their backpack, manufacturer labels, shoe laces, and use the most feather weight of all materials. Most of them will not even bother with a tent. They will sleep in the woods with a tarp. It seems great at first but if the insects starts becoming an annoyance, I wouldn’t mind carrying extra ounces for the tent. They often use titanium made gear because it is very light. They will weigh each of their items to make sure that they know which ones can be replaced or which ones hold value. Minimalists love multi functional gear also because they save space in the pack and lots of weight.
Ultralight (Under 20 Pounds)
This is where a lot of expert hikers reside on. It can be easily accomplished with the use of newer and lighter equipment. Most people would talk to their friends and companions in order to share the load or weight by putting people responsible for certain group items such as tent, cookware, stove, light and so on. A lot of ultralight hikers use equipment that are very compact and light. There are a lot of them in the Internet. They are not that expensive and they are also durable. I am going to show some ultralight camping gear examples at the bottom of this article.
Lightweight (Upto 30 Pounds -Normal)
I can’t say I belong to the ultralight camping gear group. I am more of a lightweight type of person. It does not mean I do not try to minimize the weight of my pack, I do all the time. I belong on this because the camera equipment that I carry. Even my $200 tripod is 3 pounds. It is kind of hard to sink to 2 pounds or less without paying around the $500 mark. I carry a couple of lenses and extra batteries. I try to offset by using the lightest gear I can afford. I have to tell you, a lot of items are not that expensive. They are very affordable if you buy them one by one.
Heavy (Over 30 Pounds)
If you have lots of muscles, and do not have problems carrying over 30 pounds then I will put you in this category. A couple of people say that this is normal. I really do not believe to be the case. I feel so much better if my pack is under 20 pounds. Once it goes over 20, I start to feel a lot of fatigue and my stamina goes down. If you have a lot of muscles and energy then I recommend carrying over 30 pounds but I know from personal experience that the lighter your backpack feels, the easier it is to have fun. It just feels good to have lots of stamina or energy to enjoy the scenery or the hikes.
3 Main Ultralight Camping Gear To Think About
The backpack is one of the main things that we need to keep in mind when trying to lose backpacking or camping weight. The backpack has lots of compartments and lots of features that are often not that useful. The material the backpack is created out of also creates more weight. I like my backpack to be at the 50 liter range. This is usually enough for most basic camping needs and accessories. You can get more around 65 liters and the weight of the pack shouldn’t increase much. It depends on the manufacturer or company that created the backpack. A 50 liter pack is usually enough for a 3 day hiking trip. If you are planning on more days then I recommend more space and capacity for your pack.
Ultralight tents tend to be around 2 pounds. This is a good 2 person tent so you can share the load with a friend. If you are carrying a tent then it means that your friend doesn’t have to. A lot of people that do not want to carry a lot of weight just use a tarp. A tarp doesn’t really have a lot of protection. I like tent. It is comfortable. I like my sleep to be amazing. Most people also use a hammock. Camping hammocks are good also. You do not need a sleeping bag or sleeping pad to be comfortable. The only drawback is that only one person can sleep in a hammock unless you do not mind being glued to each other.
3. Sleeping Bag
A sleeping bag is a must because the weather can be very cold at night. You need to sleep, and you need to sleep well. What is the purpose of backpacking and taking days off when you do not feel good after a trip. If you ever feel out of energy and you can’t wait to sleep at your bed then you are doing something wrong with your tent or sleeping habits. A 3 day hike often means breath taking views and places most people do not go to. You need to be able to enjoy these things and when you come home, you should be feeling that you can’t wait to get back into the outdoors. A good sleeping bag is essential for that kind of feeling.
