How To Choose A Backpacking Frying Pan
Types Of Backpacking Frying Pans
Tableware
Frying pans for backpacking are often used as a plate or tableware also. Most metallic plates for backpacking can be used as frying pans as well. Most people want to carry a light backpack. In order to do that, they have to use multipurpose items such as cookware that can be used as tableware.
Cookware
Backpacking frying pans are meant to be a cookware. There are many frying pans that are designed to be a cookware and not a tableware. You can choose these items so that you can cook better while in the wilderness.
Household Frying Pans
You can also bring household frying pans that are very small. Small frying pans are very light in weight and can be used for backpacking purposes. The only drawback is that the handle of these frying pans are not very compact. These frying pans are better suited for car camping though but people can use them for backpacking as well.
Choosing The Backpacking Frying Pan Material
There are lots of materials to choose from. I prefer titanium and stainless steel. You can get aluminum also. Aluminum is pretty good also. Titanium is very lightweight and durable. It feels kind of flimsy though. It feels kind of thin also. But my titanium cookware are very durable and they last for a long time. You can choose whatever material you would like. Just make sure that they are very durable and easy to clean.
Hard-Anodized Aluminum
Hard anodized aluminum is very inexpensive. A lot of mess kits, and cookware are made out of this material. The items are very cheap or low priced which makes them ideal for people who are just starting to learn how to go backpacking. This type of cookware will often have a Teflon coating.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is very good and very beautiful. Stainless steel is one of my favorite material for backpacking cookware and gear. Stainless steel is durable, does not break easily, rust resistant and corrosion resistant. This material is also affordable. This is a great material for backpacking gear and cookware.
Titanium
Titanium is very light in weight. It has a lot of the benefits of stainless steel like being corrosion resistant, rust resistant and being durable as well. This is a very strong material but since it is very expensive, most companies do not use a lot of it in order to lower the price. A lot of the titanium cookware I have seen and used feel rather thin and flimsy.
Cast Iron
Cast iron is just too heavy to be carried or brought to a backpacking trip. However, if there are people who love steak that bring cast iron cookware for backpacking purposes. This material is not light though.
Non-Stick Coatings That You Should Consider
Teflon Non-Stick Coatings
Teflon is a non-stick coating that makes the cookware easy to clean and easy to cook with. Left-over food particles practically fall off the item. This makes the cookware great for frying and cooking almost anything. This makes the cookware easy to clean as well.
Ceramic Non-Stick Coatings
Ceramic nonstick coatings are the same as Teflon. This type of coating is a little bit more expensive though. Since Teflon had a very bad reputation before for having a substance that was not good for health, many people prefer ceramic. While Teflon is deemed safe, most people would rather pay a little extra for ceramic non-stick coatings.
Other Considerations You Should Think About
Weight
The weight of the backpacking frying pan should be very light. We do not want a heavy frying pan. We don’t really want to bring any item that is very heavy. The more weight we carry, the easier for us to become tired and fatigued. It is best that we only bring items that are light in weight so that we will have more energy to enjoy the outdoors and have fun.
Easy To Clean
The frying pan should be easy to clean. Some frying pans are very hard to clean. The food just sticks to the pan and they become very hard to get rid of. Some, those black and burned foods get stuck to the frying pan. They are very hard to get rid of if the material is not that good. We have to make sure that the pan that we are going to get is very easy to clean.
Durable
The item should be very durable. We don’t want to keep buying a frying pan every month or even every year. We want an item that will last for a long time. A good frying pan will be durable. It can handle a lot of unintentional punishment and it could handle the outdoors as well. We really do want a durable frying pan that will not break very easily.
Multi-Purpose
I like multi purpose items. Frying pans that can be used to boil water or frying pans that can be used as a plate and so on. If the frying pan can be used as a plate and pot, then I don’t need to bring a plate or pot. I can save some space in my backpack. My backpack will not be as heavy also. So if you are going to get a backpacking pan, I highly recommend that it is also multipurpose.
Pot Gripper
There are many cases when the handle of a backpacking cookware feels rather flimsy and cheap. A lot of people bought pot grippers so that they can hold and handle backpacking cookware rather easily. There are a lot of pot grippers and oven mitts that are very light in weight and compact which is why I recommend that people should have one.
