How To Choose A Backpacking Gas Stove

Types Of Backpacking Stove

Canister

The gas stove latches on to the canister by screwing it or by using some form of mechanism that will allow the stove to attach itself to the canister. This is very easy to use, lightweight and does not cost much. Canister stoves are very popular and you will most backpackers carrying or using this type of stove.

Liquid Fuel Stoves

These gas stoves often use white gas. The containers for the white gas are often very big and weight around 20 to 30 ounces. These stoves are great for higher altitudes than canister stoves. They are more stable and often times do not need additional help stabilizing themselves.

Alcohol Stoves

Alcohol stoves are very cheap and very affordable. Most people use denatured alcohol as a fuel source. This type of alcohol can be found almost anywhere. This is very light and very compact as well.

Fuel Tablet Stoves

Fuel tablet stoves are great for backpacking since they are very light and very compact. Their small size works great for backpacking purposes. A lot of fuel tablet stoves can be folded down to a pocket sized item.

Wood Burning Stoves

Wood burning stoves are also very popular. There are a lot of designs to choose from. There are even wood burning stoves that can charge your phone and other devices. This type of stove is great because you do not need to bring a gas canister or any fuel. Most of the time, you will find a lot of wood on the trails.

Choosing A Fuel Type For Backpacking Gas Stoves

Propane

Propane provides the highest vapor pressure and therefore the best cold-weather performance. This is great for people who want to go backpacking in the winter or want to peak bag a very high mountain. Propane is heavier though so you will end up adding more weight compared to butane or isobutane.

Butane

Butane is a lot lighter than propane but it is not very good for the cold weather. Most people use butane fuel for camping stoves or portable stoves. These portable stoves are often found when you cook hotpot or cook indoors.

Isobutane

Isobutane is an isomer of butane. It has a higher vapor pressure than butane which translates to better performance. Most canister stoves will have isobutane and propane mix.

Backpacking Gas Stove Accessories

Windshield

Significant heat can be lost due to the cold air or wind. In order to minimize heat loss and maximize fuel efficiency, people will often get a windshield. Windshield will block winds from touching the flame of the stove. This will allow the cookware to heat up faster because not a lot of heat is loss due to the wind or environment.

Stabilizers

Stabilizers allow the stove to balance itself on uneven ground. This provides more balance and support. It allows people to leave the stove unattended. This is a great way to prevent the stove from flipping over.

Cookware

You will have to get some form of cookware in order to cook your food. There are many to choose from. You can get cookware sets, mess kits, pots, frying pans, and so on. I highly recommend titanium or stainless steel for the material. These are very durable and safe or nontoxic.

Backpacking Stove Features You Need To Consider

Stove Weight

Weight always matters for backpacking. We often pay for high priced items if they are half a pound lighter sometimes. It is the same for backpacking stoves or any item. We want our items to be as light as possible. Obviously a stove can be very heavy. Luckily for us, there are now lots of innovative designs and inventions for backpacking stoves.

Fuel Type

The fuel type is very important. You can use propane, butane or a mix of propane/butane. I created an article explaining the different fuel types. However, for the purpose of this article, it is just something you need to consider. Personally, the mix of butane/propane is pretty good for most of us. If you are buying a stove, keep in mind also that certain stoves will only take certain types of fuel. For example, some stoves can only use butane, some can only use propane, some can only use the mix of propane/butane. Keep this in mind because you are going to buy fuel for these stoves also.

Dimensions

We all want our backpacking gear to be very compact. It is the same for the backpacking stove. We want it as compact as possible. We have a limited amount of backpacking space; we want to carry as much as possible. A very compact stove can really help us a lot in managing our backpack space or backpack capacity.

Burn Time

Fuel canisters and fuels in general will often have a burn time. This is how long you can expect the item to last when it is used. Some fuel canisters can last for 3 hours, some more and some less. Sometimes the manufacturer will tell you the burn time and sometimes they will not also.

BTU

BTUs is very important. It is how much power or heat the stove can produce. The higher the BTU, the better. A lot of people will tell you that there are other considerations like the fuel hose, wind, windscreen and so on but in reality, the higher the BTU, the better. The higher the BTU, the faster the water will boil for our morning coffee. The higher the BTU, the faster we can heat up the pan to cook our eggs or cook our breakfast.

Piezo-Ignition

Piezo-ignition uses the electric charge that accumulates in some materials in response to high pressure. Quartz are often used for piezo-ignition. A small hammer is used to hit and deform the quartz. The sudden force produces a high voltage and electrical discharge that lights up the gas. This is very useful for backpacking or camping in the wilderness.

Price

Obviously, the price is very important. There are lots of items that are very pricey. It is because these items are often made out of durable materials, have innovative designs, and are very effective. The price is often justified if the item is very good. Keep in mind that you can save $20 or more if you buy a stove that is half a pound heavier or more.
