How To Choose A Backpacking Kettle

Types Of Outdoor Coffee Makers

Instant Coffee / Boil Water

The most common way to drink coffee is to use instant coffee. All we have to do is boil water and pour it on the coffee grounds inside a cup or container. We will then have a nice cup of coffee. This is the easiest way to drink coffee and I often do this as well.

French Press

French press is also very popular but requires some work. We put the coffee grounds at the bottom of the container. Pour hot water and soak the coffee grounds for 30 seconds or more. You will then use a screen with a plunger. Wait 3-4 minutes then press the screen down. The coffee grounds will get filtered and we will have a nice cup of coffee to enjoy.

Espresso Makers

There are lots of espresso makers that are available for backpacking and camping purposes. They are not as good as an electric espresso maker that you can get for your home but they are good enough. They taste very good as well. I mean, they are good enough for me but I am sure for the coffee purists, the taste maybe lacking.

Pour Water Then Drip

A drip type system or coffee maker is one of the simplest and best ways to make coffee. All we have to do is use a filter. We fill the filter with coffee, pour water over it, then the drinkable coffee will drip out of the filter. This is very simple but it is also very effective. You have a lot of control. You can control the flow of water, temperature, grind your own coffee and so on.

Percolators

There are a lot of percolators for outdoor use because this type of coffee maker is very popular. A percolator will have a steel rod in the middle of the container. The top of the steel rod will have a steel basket where we can put the coffee grounds. The hot liquid will rise from the steel rod in the center and pour over the coffee grounds. The water will become colder and drop on the coffee grounds. We will then be able to enjoy a flavorful coffee.

Choosing The Kettle Material

The material of the outdoor kettle matters also. Keep in mind that you also have a limited amount of fuel if you are using a gas stove. We want the material of the kettle to conduct heat easily. We want the water to boil as few minutes as possible. Each type of material also has its own strengths and weaknesses. So always check the material and go for the material that you prefer.

Hard-Anodized Aluminum

There are a lot of backpacking kettles and pots that are made out of hard anodized aluminum. This material is very cheap or does not cost a lot of money. There are lot of backpacking cookware that are made out of this material. This is pretty good and great for beginners. A lot of mess kits are made out of this material.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is one of the most popular material for backpacking cookware and kettles. Stainless steel heats up easily and very nontoxic. This material is easy to clean, scratch resistant, durable, works well and it is not that expensive. I prefer to use stainless steel also because this material is very easy to cook with. Most of my cookware at home are made out of stainless steel as well.

Titanium

Titanium is one of the most expensive material that you can get. Cookware made out of titanium tend to be expensive. Most companies create very thin cookware to lower the price. Some titanium cookware feel very flimsy but they are very durable. Titanium is very lightweight and nontoxic as well. It is very easy to clean and easy to cook with.

Coffee Equipment And Additives To Consider

Creamers

Since it is hard to bring milk into the wilderness, people will often just get creamers like Coffee Mate. This is for people who love their coffees creamy. I tend to bring some for myself also. I love my coffee to be creamy. I just do not like the bitter taste of coffee so I tend to put additives on mine. You can also bring evaporated milk but the can is heavy though.

Sugar

If you like your coffee sweet, then you should bring sugar. Some people will bring honey or stevia extracts to make their coffee taste sweeter. Some people also bring condensed milk which makes the coffee taste sweeter. This is really just a matter of preference. You don’t need to drink your coffee with sugar if you do not want to.

Coffee Filters

There are a lot of people who bring coffee filters for backpacking. These filters can also be used for filtering debris from a pool of water. If you are planning on getting water from a stream or lake, they can have debris, dirt, and soil on them. A coffee filter will take them out so that you are only left with the water.

Backpacking And Camping Equipment To Consider

Water Filtration Device

Water filters take out toxins and dirt from the water. If you are planning on using water from the lake or river, then you will need a filter to take out the dirt so that the taste of your coffee does not suffer. Dirt, soil, and other types of debris can ruin the taste of your morning coffee so having a water filter is a good idea.

Gas Stove

The best way to purify your water and kill all of the microorganisms that can make you sick is to boil the water. Boiling the water for 1 minute or more will kill a lot of bacteria, virus, and other microorganisms. I’m pretty sure boiling the water kills all the harmful microorganisms but I have to double check this information. A backpacking gas stove will definitely allow you to have drinking water while in the outdoors.

Cups

You don’t want to use the pot or kettle that you boil water with as your drinking cup. You will end up waiting for 1 hour or more to wait for the cookware to cool off. You may burn your lips if the cookware is still hot. You will want to bring your own cups if you want to enjoy a good cup of coffee while backpacking.

Other Backpacking Features To Consider

Weight

The weight of the backpacking kettle is one of the first things we need to look at. We cannot bring heavy cookware while backpacking. We cannot carry a lot of weight. Most people often have 20 to 25 pounds of weight in their backpacks. The weight of the kettle should be the first thing you need to look at. Keep in mind that a kettle is more of a luxury in the outdoors. You can use a pot to boil water as well.

Durability

The durability of the kettle matters also. We want something that will last for years. We don’t want to keep buying kettles every year. So always check or make sure that the kettles that you are going to get can handle a lot of punishments also. If it is metallic, make sure that it will not rust very easily. There are a lot of items in the Internet that are counterfeits and copycats. It is kind of hard to know which ones they are. I cannot tell also so we should check the customer reviews also.

Easy To Clean

The kettle has to be easy to clean. We don’t want kettles that retain the smell of coffee or tea. They should have no smell whatsoever. If it smells like the food or liquid that was put into it after cleaning it then it is not a good kettle. It is recommended that the kettle should be clean, no smell and have no rust if it is metallic.

Compact

We all have a limited amount of backpack space. We should try our best to get items that are compact and foldable. We should always try to look for compact items. Backpack space is very important. We are going to put other items inside the backpack like tents, sleeping bag, more cookware, and so on. Having a compact kettle can really help save space.

Price

The price of the item is very important since there are a lot of backpacking gear that we have to get. A kettle is often considered a luxury because we can use a pot to boil our water. Using a kettle is often for people that love coffee too much. I love coffee so I often bring an espresso maker with me. Anyway, the price is something we have to think about because there are so many more equipment and gear that we could get.

7 Replies to “Best 10 Backpacking Kettles Of 2024

  1. Some of these items can be used on a campfire. Thanks for including that. Went to a lot of websites that don’t know what they are talking about.

  2. Ultimately, we ended up getting jetboil cooking system. It is very expensive but it served us very well. Thank you.

  3. For the Biolite kettle pot, you will still need to get the camp stove. They work well together but sold separately. If combined, they boil water very easily.

  4. Great list of kettles for backpacking. We use a mess kit to boil water before then got a Stanley cook set which was very useful. But now we bought an outdoor espresso maker. We are somewhat of a coffee snob so we need espresso no matter where we go.

  5. I got the Stanley Camping Kettle or the first one. It is very high quality. I use it to boil water, cook eggs, cook soup, make tea and so on. The two cups are very useful also. One of the most useful backpacking cooking gear that I have ever bought.
