How To Choose A One Person Backpacking Tent

Different Types Of Tents

Dome Tents

Dome tents are easy to tell apart from the others. They will have a dome shape design or a half circle design. This design is very popular and often only require two poles to give the tent volume and space. The poles would cross each other like an ‘X’ on the top center of the tent. The poles will arc which will give the tent a dome shape.

Quick Pitch Touring Tents

These are very heavy tents and are often used for car camping or RV camping. This type of tent will often have aluminum frames that serve as the skeleton. The frames will lock and serve as the shape of the tent. The frames and tent fabric are already assembled. All the user has to do is move the frames in a certain direction to pop up the tent.

Cabin Tents

Cabin tents are huge. They look like cabins or a small house. It depends on the design. This tent is meant for a lot of people. This tent is meant for family camping and will have enough room for a lot of people. This type of tent will have a lot of space and room which is great for a family or for a group of people.

Swag And Stretcher Tents

This type of tent is often made out of canvas and there is a mattress or bedding inside. Everything is rolled up and all you have to do is unfold the tent to use it. This tent is very easy to use which is why a lot of people love this type of tent.

Number Of People That The Tent Can Hold

It is important to know the number of people that is going to sleep inside the tent. Smaller tents will be lighter and larger tents will be heavier. Keep this in mind when you are picking a tent for backpacking purposes.

One Person Tent

One person tents are the classic and traditional tents for backpacking. This is meant for one person, obviously. This is very lightweight and very compact. This is often easy to setup also. My tent takes about 5 minutes, maybe even less. This tent is often easy to pack up also. Great tent for backpacking.

Two Person Tent

There are also a lot of backpackers who would rather share a tent to save space and weight. This tent is also easy to setup and pack up. This is great for lovers and for couples. This can be used for car camping as well. A little bit heavier than the one person tent though.

Three or Four Person Tent

This type of tent is meant for car camping. This is a little bit too heavy for backpacking. You can bring it but most of the time, you will not have 3-4 people sleeping in one tent. Most people will bring their one person backpacking tent also. This tent is great for car camping and RV camping. This has a lot of space. It takes time to assemble these tents though.

Large Family Tent

This tent is meant for family camping. This is a very large tent that can fit a lot of people. Some tents look like big houses or large cabins. This tent will even have rooms. Plenty of space for a lot of people. This type of tent is very heavy though and it takes a very long time to set up and pack up this type of tent.

3 Season VS 4 Season Tent

It is important to know the seasons and temperature that you can use your tent. The tents that you will see will often be usable for 3 season or 4 season.

3 Season Tents

This is meant for spring, summer and fall. This tent cannot handle the winter weather. The manufacturer will tell you what type of tent you are getting. They will usually say the season and temperature that the tent can handle.

4 Season Tents

There is really no such thing as four season tents. This tent is really meant for the winter. This will be a heavier tent with lots of features meant for winter weather and snow. This tent is meant to be strong and durable. This can handle strong winds as well. The tent will usually only have walls and no windows. Ventilation for condensation and rain fly for extra protection against the wind. The frames will often be made out of aluminum and they will be very thick.

Lean-To And Tents

If you are planning on camping inside a lean-to, better make sure to read the guidelines. Some lean-tos do not allow you to setup a tent near it or inside it. They may not allow you to block the entrance also even if it is very windy. You can get a ticket if you do not follow these instructions.

Tent Features To Consider

Pole Hubs

A pole hub is where the poles meet which is usually at the top center of the tent. This hub provides support, stability and protection to the tent. If the hub is not very good, the shape of the tent will suffer. Pole hubs make tents easier to setup and pack up as well.

Ventilation

Ventilation is often a feature that is offered so that the tent will have a way to take out condensation. Condensation comes for your exhales, and sweat. Tents can trap these condensations and can make the tent colder and less hospitable.

Pole Clips

Pole clips are sleeves where you can attach the poles to. They start from the ground and go up to the hub then back to the ground again. These are responsible for stability, structure, and support.

Color Coding

Color coding allows the user to easily setup the tent and pack it up. Color coding saves a lot of time and it is easier to figure out where each frame, each part and each piece will go if they are color coded.

Vestibules

Vestibules are often rain fly extensions designed to store and protect your boots and other backpacking gear.

General Backpacking Features To Think About

Weight

The weight of the tent is one of the most important things that you need to consider. There are a lot of tents that are available but most are not lightweight. There are some tents that are really great and have a good design that are very light. It is important to consider the weight. The more weight we carry; the more fatigue we are going to get. Carrying less weight can also help us conserve energy and let us have more energy to have fun.

Seasons

Not all tents can handle every type of weather. Most tents can only handle summer, spring and maybe early fall. A lot of tents are not meant for the winter. If you are going on a backpacking trip and the weather is going to be cold, you have to check the tent that you are going to bring whether it can handle the cold weather.

Compact

The tent that you want has to be compact. Tents are often pretty big and the accessories are very big. You need to make sure that you are getting the most compact tent that you can afford because you may not have enough space for other items in your backpack. A compact backpacking gear will allow you to save space and room for your sleeping bag, cookware and so on.

Setup

I like my tents to be easy to set up. All of my tents take about 5 minutes to set up and 5 minutes to pack. I do not want to spend a lot of time setting up my tent and I do not want to spend a lot of time packing it up. My sleeping pads take more time than my tents. So think about the design of the tent and how easy it will be to set up.

Price

The price of the tent matters since we are all not rich. Unfortunately, the really good tents are very expensive. The design and the materials are rather expensive. I recommended getting tents that are expensive just because they are very good. They have been proven to be good. If you don’t like expensive items, then I recommend getting a hammock. They are more affordable. However, if you get a tarp, bug net, quilts, and so on, the price is practically the same.
