How To Choose A Two Person Backpacking Tent
Different Types Of Tents
Dome Tents
Dome tents are peculiar and distinct in a way that they are easy to tell apart from other tents. These tents will have a half circle shape design or a dome shape design. They will often have two poles that meet at the center top. The poles will arc and that arc will give the tent the dome shape.
Quick Pitch Touring Tents
This type of tent is often used for car camping and RV camping. The frames are often made out of aluminum. The frames will then lock to create the shape of the tent. Instant pop up tents is another name for these tents. These tents are assembled already so the user do not have to follow complicated instruction to setup these tents.
Cabin Tents Or Large Tents
These tents are huge and they often look like a small cabin or a house. This is meant for a whole lot of people. This is very heavy and meant for car camping. This type of tent is good for family camping and housing a lot of people. This tent will have a lot of space and a lot of room inside.
Swag And Stretcher Tents
This type of tent is often made from a canvas material. There will be a mattress and bedding inside the tent. The tent and all the items inside will be rolled up. In order to use the tent, the person or user has to unfold and unroll the tent. This is very easy to use and setup which are some of the reasons why this type of tent is very popular.
Number Of People The Tent Can Hold
It is important to consider the number of people that is going to be using the tent. It is also important to know the number of people that the tent can hold.
One Person Tent
One person tents are often made for backpackers. This tent is the classic and traditional tent for backpackers. The weight of this tent is often very light and this can be packed in a very small compression sack. This type of tent is easy to use, easy to setup and does not take a lot of effort to pack up as well.
Two Person Tent
This type of tent is also good for backpacking. This is great for couples or lovers that love to go backpacking. This type of tent is also very easy to pack and easy to setup. Great tent for backpacking and car camping. This has a lot of room and plenty of space that two people usually do not feel cramped or boxed in.
Three or Four Person Tent
This type of tent is too heavy for backpacking especially if the user is hiking for a lot of miles. This tent is good for car camping where you will need 3-4 people sleeping in one tent. This is good for family camping also. Children will be in a tent such as this while the parents are in another tent.
Large Family Tent
This is meant for family camping and not meant for backpacking. This tent will often have enough space for 8 or more people. This type of tent can be huge. It can resemble a small cabin, small house or just a huge tent. This is very heavy but has a lot of space and room for a lot of people.
3 Season VS 4 Season Tent
It is important to know the seasons and temperature that you can use your tent. The tents that you will see will often be usable for 3 season or 4 season.
3 Season Tents
Three season tents are meant for fall, spring and summer. This type of tent can be very light and very compact. There can be mesh windows for ventilation and two zipper doors. This tent is not good for winter. The company or manufacturer will usually tell the customer the season or temperature that the tent can handle.
4 Season Tents
Four season tents are meant for winter weather. You can use this for the summer but not really recommended. This tent will have a lot of features that are meant for winter weather like tarps, ventilation, thick frames and so on. It is better to use three season tents for the summer. Having said that, this tent is really just meant for winter and cold weather. It is not really meant for four seasons.
Lean-To And Tents
Lean-tos have rules and regulations so if you are planning on camping or sleeping inside one, you should know what you can and cannot do. Some lean-tos do not allow the camper to set up tent, and some do not allow campers to block the door even if it is very cold and windy. You can get a ticket if you do not follow the directions well.
Tent Features To Consider
Pole Hubs
A pole hub is the place at the center at the top of the tent. This is usually the place where the frames meet. This is responsible for support, stability and shape of the tent. If this is not designed very well, the shape of the tent will suffer. Pole hubs make the tent very easy to pack and setup.
Ventilation
Ventilation is used for allowing the condensation to escape the tent. Condensation often comes from our breath and from our sweat. If the tent is well ventilated, the moisture and water will escape. This will make the tent more comfortable and more hospitable.
Pole Clips
Pole clips are often the sleeves on top of the tent where you put the frames inside. They can also be clip ons where you clip the frames. The pole clips will run from the ground to the pole hub then to the ground again. These provide structure, support and stability to the tent.
Color Coding
Color coding makes the tent easier to pack and setup. Most of the time, you do not need to follow complicated instructions if the tent parts and materials are color coded.
Vestibules
Vestibules are often rain fly or tarp extensions that are meant to store and protect backpacking equipment like your boots.
General Backpacking Features To Think About
Weight
The weight of the tent needs to be considered. A tent is one of the heaviest items that you can bring. It is because it contains stakes and other accessories. We have to be careful not to bring or carry too much weight when in a backpacking trip. The more weight we carry, the easier it is for us to become more fatigue. The outdoors is just not fun when you are too tired to even walk.
Seasons
You need to check the temperature rating of your tent or which seasons you can use it. Most tents can be used for summer, and spring. A lot of tents are not made for snow and cold weather. Most of us do backpacking in the summer anyway. If you are planning on backpacking in the winter then you need to check the seasons on which you can use your tent. You don’t want to be cold or ill prepared if you hike in the winter.
Compact
Tents are often very big. The pack size are often large. So you need to think about the capacity of your backpack. You are going to carry other items also like sleeping bags, cookware, survival gear and so on. The capacity of your bag is limited so you need to budget the space. Getting items that are very compact can help you make room for other items.
Setup
The tent has to be easy to setup. After a long hike, the last thing you want to do is put effort and energy into anything. You just want a tent that is easy to setup and pack. You don’t want to put any energy on anything at all. You will just want to relax, go to sleep and have enough energy to enjoy the outdoors in the morning.
Price
The price of the tent is something you need to consider also. Unfortunately, tents are very expensive. The really good tents are not affordable. You will have to spend some money to get items that are very good for backpacking. If you want something affordable, I suggest getting backpacking hammocks. They are more affordable. However, you may have to buy tarps, bug nets and other accessories which will cost more as well.
