How To Choose A Hammock Pad

Types Of Backpacking Hammock Pads You Can Use

Closed Cell Foam

Closed cell foam hammock pads are the least comfortable out of all the sleeping pads that I have tried. A good example of a closed cell foam pad is a yoga mat. Yoga mats can protect the body from the ground but they are not that comfortable to fall asleep on. This type of sleeping pad is still better than sleeping on the ground and this type of sleeping pad also provides insulation from the cold ground.

Open Cell Foam

Open cell foam hammock pads are breathable in a sense that they allow air to pass through their membrane or pores. Memory foam mattresses are a good example of open cell foam mattress pads. This type of hammock pad is very comfortable and they retain their shape even if you push, jump or put pressure onto them. Unfortunately, this feature also makes this type of pad not very compact and hard to carry.

Self-Inflating

The most common backpacking hammock pad that you will see will be the self-inflating ones or the ones where you have to blow air into the pad. These hammock pads are very light in weight and very compact which makes them ideal for backpacking. Lots of people use these pads for camping and backpacking all the time.

Outdoor Activity Considerations

Car Camping / RV camping

If you are going car camping, you will have a lot of options on what gear to bring because you do not need to think about the weight of the item. For car camping, a lot of people bring very heavy and bulky air beds. These beds are very comfortable and often provide a lot of bed space to fall asleep onto. These beds are too big and too heavy to fit into a hammock.

Backpacking

For people that go backpacking near the parking lot, they will often bring an open cell foam hammock pad with their hammocks. These pads are very comfortable and since people do not need to walk very far, they can bring items like these pads.

Minimalist Backpacking

Minimalist backpackers will often bring a self-inflating pad for their backpacking adventures. Some of them will not bring any hammock pad at all to save or shed some weight. The self-inflating pads are very lightweight and they are also very compact which makes them ideal for backpacking.

Winter Camping

For winter camping or winter backpacking, a lot of people would bring a very high R-value closed cell foam pad with an inflatable pad if they are sleeping on a tent. For hammock users, they will use a quilt. Hammock quilts that are designed for winter will provide a lot of warmth and insulation.

Backpacking Hammock Pad Features We Should Consider

Weight

The weight of the hammock pad matters a lot in terms of backpacking. In the old days, people had to carry very heavy foam mats that weigh around 3 pounds but now we have more options. We can carry inflatable pads that are around 1 pound. We need to consider the weight because we really do not want to get tired while backpacking. We want to be fresh, energetic and have more energy for having fun.

Comfort

The hammock pad has to be comfortable. You are trying to sleep. The more comfort that you get, the easier it is to sleep. You need all the sleep you can get while backpacking. It is not easy walking for miles every day. You need to rest and you need to sleep to get your energy back. The more comfortable the pad, the better your sleep is going to be.

Inflation

You don’t really want a pad that is very hard to inflate. You are going to end up spending way too much time and effort trying to get your pad to work or become comfortable. I’ve seen people pumping their pads for 30 minutes to 1 hour. The pad was defective and it just very hard to inflate. So you need to make sure that the item you are going to get is easy to inflate so you can conserve a lot of energy and not get frustrated as well.

Price

There are different prices for different hammock pads. Some pads that are made out of foam and are very comfortable cost a lot. But they are also a little bit heavier than most. So you should look at the price. You may be paying for too much for something you do not need also. You may be able to get two pads for the price of one too depending on the company.

Durability

The durability of the pad is a key factor or something very important. There are items out there than when you sleep on them, they burst. They are not durable and you will end up wasting your money. Make sure that you are getting pads that work well and that are very durable.

Backpacking Hammock Pad Accessories

Rails / Wings

There are a few hammock pads with built in rails or built in wings. These wings provide a lot of comfort and snuggles with the user. They provide warmth, comfort and they feel pretty good on the skin.

Pillows

There are a lot of people that are having problems sleeping in the outdoors. I often recommend that they get a backpacking pillow because these pillows are very comfortable. We are so used to sleeping with pillows that using one while in a backpacking trip will often provide a lot of comfort.

Air Pumps

If you want to get a third party air pump for your air beds, sleeping pads and hammock pads then I recommend getting one. Most of the time, the air pumps that come with the bed are not very powerful. Getting a powerful air pump can speed up the inflating and deflating process.

Patches

A lot of inflatable sleeping pads give out patches in case you end up putting holes on the item. Some do not. You can always get patches online. These patches can fix or repair the sleeping pad that has holes on it so that you can use the item again. It is a lot better than getting another sleeping pad which can cost a lot of money.
