How To Choose A Backpacking Wood Burning Stove

Types Of Backpacking Wood Burning Stoves

Here are typical gear or equipment that people use to cook foods with wood while in a backpacking trip.

Barbecue Grate

There are a lot of people who use barbecue grates to cook their foods while in a backpacking trip. They often use a small grate that can fit inside a backpack. The grate will be put on top of stones with the wood and fire below the grate.

Cooling Rack

People have been known to use barbecue and oven cooling racks also that are made out of stainless steel. The steel can handle extreme heat, nontoxic and food safe. These racks are great for cooking food also.

Pocket Sized Wood Burning Stove

There are a lot of pocket sized wood burning stoves. Some are foldable, while others can be disassembled. These wood stove are great for backpacking because they are often very light in weight and they are good enough to cook foods with.

Foldable Wood Burning Stove

There are also some heavy foldable wood stoves that weigh around 2 pounds. These stoves are pretty heavy but if you are not going to be hiking for a lot of miles then you can bring these stoves. They are pretty big and it is a lot safer and easier to cook with.

Choosing The Material Of Your Wood Burning Stove

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is one of the best material for backpacking. This material is very durable and can handle heat very well. Stainless steel backpacking gear tend to last for a very long time. This material is rust resistant, corrosion resistant, safe and nontoxic. Perfect for foods and for backpacking.

Titanium

Titanium is somewhat more expensive than stainless steel but it is definitely lighter. A lot of backpacking wood burning stoves are made out of titanium. A lot of people prefer titanium because it takes a lot of energy to walk a lot of miles. The less weight that you carry, the more energy you will have. Titanium is also very durable. If you take care of your titanium gear then they will most likely last for a long time.

Chrome Plated Steel

A lot of wood burning stoves can be made of steel as well. There are a lot of steel that rust and corrode easily. In order to prevent this from happening, companies would put a coating on the steel. Chrome plated steel is a very popular steel when it comes to barbecue and grills.

Legs Or No Legs

Legs

If your wood burning stove has legs, it will be more stable. Legs provide stability and support to the backpacking stove. However, legs do add weight. If you want to carry a backpack that is very light then having legs on your wood burning stove / grate is not a good idea.

No Legs

If your stove does not have any legs then you will have to use rocks to stabilize it especially if you put your stove on an uneven terrain.

Other Considerations You Should Think About

Weight

The weight of the backpacking wood stoves matters a lot. We are carrying a lot of items other than this. We have a finite amount of weight that we can carry. Carrying too much weight can cause fatigue and we will have less fun when that happens. It is important that the weight of the stove be as light as possible. Luckily for us, most wooden stoves for the outdoors are very light.

Pack Size

The pack size of the stove is important. We are going to carry a lot of items. Our bag capacity is very limited. We are not going to be able to carry everything if we do not budget the space in our backpacks. So having a compact, small or foldable stove is ideal for backpacking. There are a lot of stoves to choose from just make sure that you consider the pack size of the stove that you are getting.

Price

For some reason, the smaller the more expensive the stove is. I have no idea why it is like that. Maybe you are paying for the design and company but the smaller and more compact the stove, the more expensive it becomes. I highly recommend that you do get something small but at the same time, you need to consider the price. You may be able to get two stoves from a different manufacturer for the price of one.

Ease Of Use

You really do not want anything complicated when backpacking. A lot of stoves are pretty simple. You don’t really want to put a lot of effort in creating heat or cooking. A lot of your energy is going to be used walking or hiking. It is best to have items that are very easy to use.

Durability

The durability is also very important. There are a lot of stoves that are not very durable. The stoves are often small and thin. It is because the weight and dimensions are important when it comes to the outdoors. So sometimes the item may not be very durable and may require a lot of care. You need to at least make sure that you are getting a very durable item. Something that will at least not get squished or break while in your backpack.
