How To Choose A Sleeping Bag
Seasons For The Sleeping Bag
3 Seasons
Three season sleeping bags then to be very lightweight and these do not have a lot of fillings inside them. These allow air to come in and out of the sleeping bag. Three season sleeping bags are meant for summer, spring and fall. There are many variations, and designs to choose from. These sleeping bags tend to provide cool air to the user and not provide a lot of insulation. Depends on the design though.
4 Seasons
Four season sleeping bags are sleeping bags that are meant for the winter. Nobody uses a sleeping bag that is meant for the winter and use it in the summer. It is just going to be too hot and uncomfortable. Four seasons often just mean winter or cold weather. These sleeping bags are very bulky, a little bit heavier and have a lot of fillings inside them.
Summer Sleeping Bags
Summer sleeping bags are meant for the summer season. These sleeping bags are very thin and very lightweight. These do not provide a lot of insulation but rather allow air to pass through. Most of the time, these will have a rectangular shape. These sleeping bags cannot be used when the weather gets a little bit cold. They do not have enough insulation or fillings for fall and spring.
Types Of Sleeping Bags
1 Person Sleeping Bag
This is the most common type of sleeping bag and most people will get this one. This will only have enough room for one person. This is very popular and most backpackers will have one in their gear or home.
2 Person Sleeping Bags
This is meant for lovers or couples. This type of sleeping bag is very heavy, bulky and very hard to transport. These sleeping bags are often very roomy for two people and not cramped. It is like 2-4 sleeping bags combined into one so the item tends to be very bulky.
Sleeping Bags That Can Be Combined
These are one-person sleeping bags that can be combined so that they can turn into a two-person sleeping bags. You will often have to combine the zippers together to create a two person sleeping bag. The drawback is that these are often very cramped for two people. Not a lot of room to wiggle or move.
Shapes Of Sleeping Bags
Rectangular
Rectangular sleeping bags are usually sleeping bags meant for three seasons. There is plenty of space and room on the head and feet. You can easily wiggle your head and move your feet while inside these sleeping bags. Air is often encouraged to pass through and these sleeping bags tend to not insulate that well or provide a lot of warmth.
Mummy
Mummy sleeping bags are often meant the shape of winter sleeping bags. These sleeping bags are very form fitting and these provide a lot of warmth and insulation. There is not much room or space to move but the sleeping bag is designed to provide as much heat as possible.
Kid Size Sleeping Bags
This is just sleeping bags that are smaller in size. These are meant for kids and they are often very thin. Most people do not bring kids to a winter camping due to the dangers of the outdoors. So these sleeping bags are meant for warmer and gentler climates.
Features Of A Sleeping Bag
Temperature Rating
Sleeping bags will often have a temperature rating. Most companies will tell you the temperature that the sleeping bag is useable. Obviously, you shouldn’t use sleeping bags that have temperature rating that is higher than the temperature outside. You may freeze to death. For example, the sleeping is good for 40 degree Fahrenheit, then you cannot use this sleeping bag for 39 degree Fahrenheit or lower.
Outer Shell Fabric
The outer shell fabric is often water repellent to keep the fillings dry. There are a lot of fillings that lose their ability to insulate and ability to keep the person warm whenever they get wet. It is important for the fillings to stay dry. The outer shell fabric will often repel water from getting into the fillings. Most outer shell fabric will be treated with DWR finish especially if the item is meant to be used in the winter.
Sleeping Bag Hood
Sleeping bag hood is often found in a mummy shaped sleeping bag. These sleeping bags are very compact and form fitting like I said before. The hood is very form fitting as well. The hood provides warmth and insulation to the head. There is no room for the head to move but the hood gives the head more warmth and insulation.
Draft Blocking Features
This prevents cold air from getting inside the sleeping. This feature is very common for winter sleeping bags that are designed to provide a lot of warmth. Most summer sleeping bags will not have this feature.
Pockets
Pockets are great and can allow you to put keys, flashlights and other important items nearby. You do not need to spend time and effort searching for your car keys or flashlights if you know that they are inside the sleeping bag’s pocket.
Type Of Insulation
Down
One of the best fillings to have since this provides a lot of warmth. This will give the most warmth and insulation when compared to other fillings. This material is very light in weight. It is because this is somewhat expensive that most items that have down fillings are also expensive. One thing to remember is that whenever down filling gets wet, it loses all of its warmth and insulating properties.
Synthetic
This material is very warm and ideal for the cold weather. This does not provide as much warmth as down fillings though. Synthetic filling is very good and very affordable. Synthetic fillings do not lose all of their warmth when they get wet which is one of their biggest advantages over down. One problem of synthetic filling is that this is not as lightweight as down.
General Things To Consider
Comfort
Comfort is one of the most important things that we need to look for. Comfort is very important since we all want to be comfortable in order to get a good night’s sleep. I can sleep just about anywhere but a lot of people need to be very comfortable. A good night’s sleep will provide you with lots of energy and will allow you to be more open to having fun in the next morning.
Size
Make sure that the item fits you and can encompass your whole body. This will allow you to be more comfortable. If the item is too tight, too big, too narrow, too small and so on then you will not be very comfortable. Always check the dimensions of the sleeping bag and make sure that you are getting one that fits you properly. If not, you can always return it.
Compact
Make sure that the item that you are getting is very compact. The more compact the sleeping bag the better it will be for you. It is just a lot easier to be more organized if the item is compact. It is easier to unpack and pack them. It is easier to transport them as well. A compact sleeping bag provides more comfort and less annoyances. You can always get a compression sack also if the item you got is not very compact.
Warmth
Some sleeping bags can be used for the winter and some are meant for the summer. You don’t want to use a very warm sleeping bag in the summer unless you are going very high in elevation or going to a place that is pretty cold. So make sure that you pay attention to the warmth that the sleeping bag provides. It is better to have one for the summer and have one for the winter.
Durable
I love durable items. I hate items that fall apart easily. Items that fall apart easily tend to just waste my money and time because I have to return them. So when you are thinking of getting a sleeping bag, make sure that it is very durable. You can just look at the reviews or the material of the item. This will give you a good idea if the item is very good or not.
