How To Choose A Blister Pad
Types Of Blister Pads
Moleskin
Moleskins provide a barrier or an extra layer of protection to the blister. There are many different kinds of moleskin. Some you need to cut and some are already cut already. Moleskins deter more friction from happening to the blister. This will allow the blister to heal.
Band
Band aids are very thin and not particularly good at deterring friction and pressure from the blister. However, band aids do provide protection and deter a little bit of friction. They can prevent infection and bacteria from going to the blister as well.
Gauze
Gauze is often made out of cotton and used for dressing various kinds of wounds. This is especially useful for dressing wounds where other fabrics might stick to the burn or laceration. This is ideal for large blisters and large wounds.
Things To Think About
Size
The size of the blister pad matters. It depends on how big of an area on your foot you want to cover up. It is better to use one big pad if you are going to cover a big area rather than multiple small ones since the small ones tend to fall out. There are items that are available in sets. You may want to try that or measure that area on your foot you want to cover.
Price
The price of the item is somewhat important. Most blister pads are very affordable. There are some that are very expensive. I wonder if that is like a mistake or somebody trying to scam people. Anyway, blister pads are very affordable. You do not need to pay a lot for one. However, if you plan on using the pads for a whole year or so, then make sure that you pay attention to the price. Getting enough pads for 1 whole year of hiking can be very expensive.
Effectiveness
The effectiveness of the blister pad matters. Make sure that the item sticks to the skin and lasts very long. Some blister pads are not that good in protecting your skin also. You may still end up getting some sort of friction on the spot on your skin that you are trying to protect. Make sure that the item you are getting is very effective and can help you heal your blisters or protect your feet from getting blisters.
Comfort
Make sure that the item or blister pad feels comfortable when you are walking. Test it out first before hiking with one. You may end up feeling very uncomfortable or the blister pad may end up irritating your skin more. So try it out first and walk around a block before using them in a long hike. You may end up with very irritated feet or you may feel very uncomfortable while hiking.
Alternatives To A Blister Pad
Blister Creams
Blister creams can help prevent blisters from happening and there are also blister creams that can help speed up the healing process. If you have a blister already, it is better to get blister creams that will speed up the recovery process. It is also a good idea to get some antibacterial ointments.
Blister Socks
Blister socks are meant to deter blisters from happening. There are many types of blister socks and there are many different materials to choose from. I often prefer merino wool socks because they are moisture wicking and very comfortable.
Antiperspirant
Some people put antiperspirant on the blister or foot to prevent the foot from perspiring too much. Sweat can increase friction and this can cause more blisters. A thin layer of antiperspirant can prevent friction and blisters from happening.
How To Heal A Blister
Blister That Has Popped
It is important to wash the area with warm water and soap. This will clean the surrounding area and clean the blister of harmful microorganisms. Try to remove the unnecessary skin flaps that has remained and make the blister skin rather smooth. Apply antibiotics and other blister healing creams to the blister. You can then cover the blister with a bandage, mole skin or gauze.
Blister That Has Not Popped
We shouldn’t pop the blister if it has not popped yet. Popping the blister will make the blister heal slower and cause the person a lot of pain. You can put a mole skin, bandage or gauze. Try to make sure that there will be no friction and pressure that goes to the blister.
How To Drain A Blister
If the blister is very large, and very painful then I will often drain it. Wash the blister and the surrounding area. I will often sterilize a needle with rubbing alcohol and water. I will puncture a small hole at the edge of the blister then I will let the fluid out. I will wash it again, then apply anti-biotic ointment or a healing ointment. I will cover the blister with mole skin, bandage or gauze.
After Care
To make sure that the blister heals as fast as possible, it is best to change the bandage daily especially when it gets dirty. I would avoid wearing shoes, running or doing any activity that will worsen the blister. I will often wear blister resists socks to make sure that the blister does not get worst.
